What it really means to “Take Up Space” & Why it matters

I spent years trying to shrink myself, in meetings, in rooms where I was the only Black woman, even in the gym. But the moment I decided to redefine how to take up space, everything changed.

Taking up space isn’t just a phrase, it’s an intentional decision, sometimes even a choice to show up as you need (because showing up fully is not always safe), unapologetically, and in a way that works for YOU. It’s a way of saying, “I belong,” even when the world tries to convince you otherwise. For me, it started when I learned I had been laid off while pregnant. There is no good timing for being laid off, but to be honest, it was relief because I had spent so much of my corporate career playing small, letting fear be my motivator (or lack of motivation let s be honest). It carried over to playing small in the gym, isolating myself even more so, not believing in my capabilities, thinking being SMALLER was the best way to be ME and to find success.

But here’s the thing: taking up space isn’t about being loud, or boastful, it’s about finding ways that work for you to show up for YOU. And for Black women and women of color, it’s an act of revolution and more importantly liberation.

Why Taking Up Space Matters

When we take up space, were not just giving yourselves permission, we  give others permission to do the same as well. It’s not just about filling the room physically(although notably i do that regardless because I am 5’9 and have a huge beautiful hair) it’s about bringing the part(s) of you that will make you proud, your ideas, your voice, and your strength to the table. In leadership, this looks like stepping into roles you’re more than qualified for. In fitness, it looks like claiming your place on the platform, in the gym. In your life, it looks like taking care of yourself because we are no longer wearing the cape to save everyone except ourselves.

This is personal for me. I’ve been in spaces where my voice wasn’t valued, and I’ve heard so many stories from Black women and WOC who’ve felt the same. But I’ve also seen what happens when we stop holding back—when we stop shrinking and start leading. It’s powerful.

How to Start Taking Up Space

If you’re ready to stop playing small, here are three ways to start today:

1. Define Taking up space: use the take up space formula to help create your definition.  Assess Safety + what type of consistency + what are my fears + what do I values/ what are my differences = taking up space. If you want to learn how to take up space from Black women and WOC leaders who share actionable insights based on real experiences, subscribe to the Take Up Space Project Podcast.

Example: Taking up space means I am standing ten toes down on being who I am and not letting fear allow me to be small.

2. Bet on Yourself: Stop waiting for others to validate your goals or tell you you’re ready. You already have what it takes. Be consistent, embrace your values and take action even in fear, bet on yourself. (PS, want to lean into betting on yourself, grab our FREE ebook, Bet on Yourself to create more influence

3. Celebrate ALL Wins: Whether you hit a PR in the gym, crush a project at work, wake up for your 5 am alarm, celebrate it unapologetically. Taking up space means acknowledging your efforts and successes, no matter how big or small.

4. Set Boundaries: Taking up space isn’t just about action; it’s also about saying no to anything that doesn’t align with your values or goals. Protect your energy so you can show up fully where it matters most.

Lead Your Way

Taking up space is about more than confidence—it’s about leadership. It’s about creating the life and career you want, on your terms. For me, it’s been about stepping into my roles as a coach, athlete, and entrepreneur, even when I wasn’t sure how it would all work out.

If you’re feeling hesitant, know this: the world needs what you bring to the table. It’s time to stop asking for permission and giving ourselves permission to take up space.

So, where will you take up space today?
